About this tool

BMI — Body Mass Index — is the quick screening number doctors and gyms use worldwide to see whether a weight sits in the healthy range for a height. Enter your weight and height and see your number and its category, explained in plain words rather than medical fog.

It asks for nothing you do not already know: weight in kilograms, height in centimetres or feet and inches. The formula (kg ÷ m²) is shown with your result, because a number you cannot trace is a number you should not trust.

Worth knowing: BMI is a screen, not a verdict. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so a muscular athlete can land in “overweight” while perfectly healthy, and it is not designed for children or pregnancy. If your number worries you, the next step is a proper conversation with a doctor, not a diet from the internet.

Questions people ask

What is a healthy BMI range?

For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range. Below 18.5 is classed underweight; 25 to 29.9 overweight; 30 and above obese. These are the World Health Organization's standard adult bands.

What is the BMI formula?

Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared: kg ÷ m². A person of 70 kg at 1.75 m has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9.

Does BMI work for children?

Not with these bands. Children and teenagers are assessed with growth charts that account for age and sex, so use a paediatric chart instead.

How much weight should I aim for?

This tool can show you which weight range counts as healthy for your height — divide nothing, just try weights near the middle of the 18.5–24.9 band. For an actual plan, talk to a doctor or dietitian.
