About this tool

Monetisation asks for 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, but YouTube Analytics talks in views and average view duration — and leaves the multiplication to you. Enter both numbers here and see your estimated watch hours, plus exactly how many hours stand between you and 4,000.

The gap figure is the useful one for planning. “1,900 hours to go” turns into real targets: at your current average view duration, it is roughly this many more views; or at your current views, this much more watch time per video. Strategy starts when the number has units you can act on.

Worth knowing: This is an estimate built from the numbers you enter. YouTube's official counter in YouTube Studio (Monetisation tab) is the final word, because YouTube filters out some watch time — Shorts views, for example, do not count toward the 4,000 hours at all.

Questions people ask

What is the formula?

Watch hours = views × average view duration, converted into hours. 10,000 views at an average of 4 minutes each is about 667 watch hours.

My views are high but my hours are low. What gives?

Average view duration is doing it. 50,000 views of 20 seconds each is only about 278 hours — people are clicking and leaving. Longer retention beats raw views for this target every time.

Do Shorts count toward the 4,000 hours?

No. Watch time from the Shorts feed does not count toward the Partner Programme's 4,000 hours (Shorts have their own 10-million-views route). This calculator is for regular long-form views.

Is this the exact number YouTube counts?

It is a close estimate from your Analytics numbers. The official figure lives in YouTube Studio, and it is always the one that decides eligibility.
